Tips
On
this page we want to give you a couple of tips for your stay in Vienna,
on one hand of what to do, on the other hand practical tips
that can ease life as a guest of ViennApart.
We prepared following items for you: automobile traffic The
whole 9th district of Vienna (Alsergrund) is a
short-term parking zone by payment, i.e. at Monday-Friday from
8-22 o'clock (excluded holidays) a parking fee has to be paid. This can
be done by filling out of the parking tickets that are for sale at
tobacconists and at the selling points of the Wiener Linien
(underground stations, tram, train) for 30, 60 or 90 minutes. An hour
parking costs 1.20 €. Moreover the parking is restricted also on a
maximum time (usually 1.5 hours); this however is
rarely controlled. The parking tickets must be filled out exactly,
they may be rounded off that time on the next quarter of an hour. If
you combine more than one ticket, the same time must be written on all
sheets. An invalid or missing park certificate can be fined with currently € 21. The
advantage of this regulation is that for that in most of the time it is
possible to find free parking places near the house. Parking
on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays is free. Also there are free
10 minutes park certificates, that can be used for short stays
(but here no rounding or combining with the regular park
certificates is allowed)
If
you want to bring your car, we can recommend that you either park
your vehicle outside the "Gürtel" in the
18th district (behind the WIFI) as there is no short-term parking
zone or you let your car stay in a favorable Park&Ride unit
(e.g.. Spittelau at 3€/day) and to use public transportation.
More information can be found at http://www.parkeninwien.at (only in German, unfortunately)
Public transport The
public traffic network in VIENNA is very well established, basically are
there following types: tramway, bus, underground and Schnellbahn (urban rail). Directly
in front of the house at Nussdorfer Straße there is a tramway stop
which is served by several lines; the lines 37 and 38 lead directly in
5 minutes into
the center (Schottentor), line 37 (other direction) takes you
within 15 minutes to
Grinzing. The next undeground station is 5 minutes on foot (line U6,
Währingerstraße/Volksoper) or 5 min. with the streetcar (line U2, Schottentor).
One finds a good overview over the lines under http://www.wienerlinien.at; at http://www.vor.at it is possible to request a personal schedule (with calculation of the most favorable route).
Tickes
can be bought at the points of sale of the Vienna Lines (at larger
underground stations) and in most tobacconists. There are quite
favourable offers for tourists (e.g.72 hours Vienna). Inform
yourself on
the Internet or ask someone.
Tourist informationThe main tourist information of Vienna is at the corner Albertinaplatz /
Maysedergasse, behind the Vienna State Opera (daily 9 - 19
o'clock); on the Internet under http://www.wien.info many useful information can be found. MapIn
all larger book shops, several printed maps of
Vienna can be bought; on the internet a free online service of the Vienna City Council can be recommended: under http://www.wien.gv.at/stadtplan/
for any address within Vienna a surrounding plan including public
transportation etc can be displayed. Since short time, even aerial
pictures are offered for free.
In (hopefully only theoretical) case that it is necessary to call an emergency service you can use
the following phone numbers, that can be dialled from every phone without
area code and free of charge:
112 European Emergency call (specially for mobile phones, also without SIM-card attached) 122 Fire departments 133 Police 144 Ambulance
120 ÖAMTC (driver club offering breakdown aid) 141 Physician on night duty (if you need medical aid in the night or at the weekend)
Telephone
The traditional cable network almost was replaced in the last years by the advancing of the mobile telephony. In the austrian market there are mainly four operators (+ some virtual operators), they are:
- A1 (prefix 0664, if number not ported)
- T-mobile (prefix 0676) with tele.ring (0650)
- one (prefix 0699)
- 3 (Hutchison 3G, 0660)
There
are lots of different tariffs, starting from 0 cent per
minute (flat fee for 20 € per month) up to 30 cents pr minutes.
Some discounters already offer already prepaid card phones with
general tariffs (to all networks in
Austria) of around 4-7 cent / minute. Attention: the roaming fee for
owner of foreign mobile phones can be extremely high, even if you call
an Austrian number. Also home calls can become rather expensive. Tip:
If you want to call much within Austria or home, it is
recommended to use a mobile phone of an Austrian operator. We can
offer guests of
ViennApart a prepaid mobile phone of an Austrian discount operator to
even costs.
Security
The
ninth district itself is known as a very secure and quiet residential area with a
very good standard. Nevertheless like in every
large city there are occasional burglaries as well as small crime as
well as fraudulences, pockets robbery etc. The
apartments are
equipped with security doors (with fire protection),
nevertheless you should lock the doors from inside while you
are sleeping, and lock the door when you are going out. You should be careful on populated and tourist places (e.g. near St. Stephen's)
and in crowded public transport; here especially
foreign guests sometimes are victims of pickpockets.
ShoppingIn the vicinity of the house, many purchase possibilities for all needs can be found. A
supermarket (SPAR) can be found directly on the other side of the street
(30m of the house entry), in the former "market hall", here all
daily necessities can be acquired. For shopping of clothing, electronics, books, cosmetic etc., we can recommend following business zones:
- Mariahilferstraße (U6 direction Siebenhirten - station Westbbahnhof): Businesses and shopping
centers on entire length of the street (until U2-Museumsquartier)
- Lugner city (U6 direction Siebenhirten - station Burggasse/Stadthalle): City shopping Mall (of Mr. Lugner)
- Kärntnerstraße + Graben as well
as the zone all around the Stephans' cathedral (line 37/38 Schottentor - Bus 1A
Stephansplatz) mainly for high-prized luxury articles
- Millennium city (U6 direction Floridsdorf), modern shopping center with movie theater etc.
- By car: SCS (shopping
city south); largest shopping center of Europe (by public transport with U6 until
Philadelphiabrücke + local train to Baden, ca. 45 min.)
Restaurants and cafes In
the environment of the house, there many possibilities are to satisfy
the small
or large hunger. Different cuisines can be found from typically
Viennese over Italian restaurants to Indian restaurants. Also there are
several coffee houses in the direct environment of the
house. Please ask us for recommendations and/or tell us you with where
you
made good or also bad experiences.
Christmas markets / new year's eve pathAt
the time before Christmas, it is "must" to see one of many
Christmas markets in Vienna. Marvel at the quite nightly illuminated
stands with all kinds of handicraft "treasures" and warm yourself at
one of the many food stands with hot Punsch, Glühwein
and typical foods. Some of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets are:
- At the Rathausplatz (in front of the city hall): the largest and most traditional Christmas market of Vienna
- Schloss Schönbrunn: somewhat smaller, but not so crowded atmosphere; more arts and crafts
- Spittelberg: a lot of arts and crafts, also "more alternative" things
- Old general hospital: In the old building of the AKH (from before
the erection of the new monster building complex), a nice Christmas market,
many Viennese encounter here after work to drink some Punsch or
Glühwein
A
unique and often visited experience is the annual "new year's eve path"
when
almost the entire inner city (with many stations)
is designated to a single new year's eve party-way. Much sparkling
wine,
happy mood and certainly the traditional Viennese waltz may not be
missing here when the new year is greeted with fireworks and the chime of the Pummerin (large bell of the Stephansdom). CulturePeople's operaThis is the second opera house of Vienna (after the Staatsoper) is
and is in direct vicinity of the house (5 min. on foot, near the
U6-Station Währingerstraße/Volksoper). It shows mainly operas and
operetta as well as musical evenings, at a very good level and at moderate prices (in comparison to the Staatsoper).
There is the especially advantageous offer that children pay (accompanied by adults) only 25% the cards price!

Museum Liechtenstein In
2006, the private collection of the duke of Liechtenstein was
established here again. It shows a large selection of all types and directions of art from many epochs.

museum dedicated to the famous Austrian psychiatrist and founter of the
Psychoanalysis can be found in his living place, at Berggase 19, only
